When Shané Darby was growing up, her Jamaican parents always told her she was going to be somebody.

She was a bright kid who loved to read about revolutionaries, with aspirations of becoming a radio host to showcase her love of music.

During her senior year at Mount Pleasant High School, she got into Howard University, her dream school. But a month before her senior prom in March 2007, Darby found out she was pregnant.

The trajectory of her life changed instantly. And so did her dreams.

Now, 13 years later, Darby isn't the radio host she hoped to be. Instead, she's helping expectant mothers in Wilmington through her initiative that focuses on black maternal health.
