WHAT IS BABYWEARING?

Babywearing is a supportive care-giving practice that keeps babies close to their caregiver while promoting bonding, comfort and safe positioning.

Babywearing uses a wrap, sling or carrier to hold the baby close to the body of a parent or caregiver.

Origin of Babywearing

Babywearing is not a new practice,it is an ancestral practice rooted in thousands of

years of African tradition, survival through the transatlantic slave trade and a modern

reclamation of cultural identity.Across many African communities, caregivers have carried babies

close to the body using cloth, wraps, slings and other traditional fabrics for generations.

This practice allowed parents and caregivers to keep infants safe, comforted and

connected while working, travelling, caring for other children and participating in community

life.Babywearing became a part of how families maintained closeness, care and connection

across generations. This practice emphasized how babywearing was not only a modern

parenting trend practiced within Black communities but also a form of care, resilience and

cultural continuity.

Bonding and Emotional Wellness

Babywearing encourages close physical contact between the baby and caregiver which helps parents to notice early hunger cues, changes in behavior and signs of discomfort more quickly. Responding to the cues helps build trust between the baby and caregiver. It may also increase parental confidence and support secure attachment.

Close contact may promote the release of oxytocin connected to bonding and stress reduction. For mothers in postpartum period, babywearing may support emotional well being by making them feel more connected to their babies however, it should not be considered as treatment for postpartum depression.

Breastfeeding Support

Babywearing can help mothers respond earlier to feeding cues and may encourage more frequent breastfeeding. The frequent breastfeeding can help establish and maintain milk supply while ensuring optimal nutrition for the baby. Also, it contributes to decreased risks for a range of illnesses for both mother and child.

Comfort and Healthy Development

Babywearing may help soothe infants who are crying and those with colic-like symptoms. Close contact helps regulate the baby’s temperature, heart rate and sleep-wake patterns, encourage healthy brain development through touch and interaction and may support language development because babies are close to their caregiver’s voice and face.

Promote Healthy Physical Development

When worn correctly, babywearing supports healthy posture and may reduce the risk of developmental hip dysplasia. It may also reduce the risk of flat head syndrome when combined with safe sleep practices. It also supports the mothers physical health as they move around with the baby.

Support for Fathers and Other Caregivers

Babywearing is not only beneficial for mothers and infants,it can also support bonding between babies and fathers and other caregivers. It increases care-giving confidence, improves responsiveness to infant cues and reduces stress and anxiety. Babywearing gives them an active role in comforting, bonding with and caring for the baby.

Health Equity and Everyday Support

Babywearing can be an affordable and practical tool for families. It allows caregivers to keep babies close while staying mobile, completing daily activities, caring for other children, using public transportation or moving through community spaces.
