MEET OUR FOUNDER

Hi! My name is Shané Darby. I was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware, to an immigrant Jamaican mother and step-father and am a mother to 3 amazing girls.

Towards the end of my senior year at Mount Pleasant High School, I became pregnant with my first daughter. Despite knowing the tough road ahead, I continued my education at Temple University, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Mass Communication & African Studies and a Master's Degree in Africana Studies.

My journey as a young mother, including all three pregnancies, has been full of challenges and adversity. So, I began educating myself to become more aware of Black women and babies' tremendous disparities in their maternal care and the national movement led by Black women to address this issue. My love of motherhood paired with a passion for making a difference led me to establish Black Mothers In Power.

Recently, I completed training to become a certified Postpartum Doula and am also inspired to become certified in Perinatal Mental Health therapy.
